With our ever increasing use of fossil fuels and the resulting emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, we are conducting a global experiment on ourselves and on our children with potentially disastrous consequences on our health. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), formed in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Program and World Meteorological Organization, predicts an unprecedented rate of temperature increase over the next century. Although the climate change scenarios have limited predictive value with respect to any particular region, the scientific consensus is that something will happen concerning climate change will potentially have a serious public health impact.
