Hiring: Research Scientist – Social Sciences

The UW Climate Impacts Group is hiring a new, full-time Research Scientist with a focus on social sciences. This position will add breadth to the work we do and support the Climate Impacts Group’s senior researchers on climate change adaptation projects with our federal, tribal, state and local partners.

We envision this position will contribute to: 1) applying social science and policy research to new climate impacts/adaptation projects independently and/or with guidance; 2) working with the Climate Impacts Group’s senior research staff to identify and execute on opportunities to move projects from analysis to implementation; and 3) providing logistical, project management and research support to projects.

We are seeking a candidate with a social science or policy background and project management experience who is passionate about our organizational mission and our co-production model. While educational attainment is valued, we also encourage applications from practitioners who have worked in government, non-profits and consulting who can bring a practical social science orientation to the Climate Impacts Group team.

The expected salary range for this position is $54K to $65K.

We will start reviewing applications for this position on Friday, January 14, 2022. To learn more and apply, please visit the UW Hires website.

We are also hiring a research scientist with a focus on natural resources. Learn more about this open position.

Questions and answers about this position:

We will post answers to questions we receive about this position on this webpage to ensure transparency and equity in our hiring process. Please check back occasionally for more information.

Hypothetically, if a highly qualified candidate applied and this salary was below his/her/their current salary (particularly in a place where the cost of living is lower than Seattle), would there be room for salary negotiation?

We do not expect to negotiate far beyond the stated salary range. While we understand that there is a lot of excellent talent committed to addressing the impacts of climate change, our current need is for two staff members to play more of a supporting role in the Climate Impacts Group’s portfolio of research.

Would I be overqualified for this position if I have a Ph.D.?

This position is intended for a research scientist that will play a supporting role in executing on research across projects developed and managed by the principal investigators at the Climate Impacts Group. This position has no fundraising expectations and is consequently considered a more “junior” position. Most Climate Impacts Group staff currently in similar roles have completed a master’s degree, although hiring the right person with a lesser or greater degree of education is certainly possible.
