Welcome Becca Nixon, Climate Social Science Specialist!

We are excited to welcome Becca Nixon to the Climate Impacts Group team! Becca is joining us as a Climate Social Science Specialist with the Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative.

Becca uses a climate justice lens and mixed social science methods (i.e., qualitative and quantitative approaches) to examine climate adaptation decision-making processes and outcomes. In this work, she has partnered with local governments and community organizations throughout North America and Asia on topics including flooding, green infrastructure, agricultural systems, and coastal planning.

Becca holds a Ph.D. from Purdue University in environmental social science and a dual master’s degree from Iowa State University in sustainable agriculture and community and regional planning.

We asked Becca two questions to get to know her better–read her answers below!

Q: What makes you feel most excited about your work in climate resilience?

A: What I’m most excited about now working with the Climate Impacts Group is the opportunity to partner with communities throughout the region. We know there are people and organizations that are doing incredible local work for climate resilience. I want to understand what resilience means in the local context and find ways to support existing work or new innovative approaches to promote equitable resilience. The fact is, climate resilience touches so much of our lives, from our health and well-being to the economy, which can make it difficult work, but also really powerful.

Q: What is your favorite way to enjoy nature?

A: I’ve lived in many areas across the U.S. and there is always beauty in the outdoors, even in the urban areas. I love getting outside wherever I am, mostly through running trails – both urban and mountain – and I’m excited to explore this area.

Please join us in welcoming Becca to our team!
