Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center is Hiring!

The Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, a program of the Climate Impacts Group, is seeking qualified applicants for their Actionable Science Postdoctoral Fellow position. The Actionable Science Fellow will play a leading role in the NW CASC’s efforts to foster co-production of decision-relevant science across the Northwest. Preference will be given to applications received by September 5, 2018.

Sea-level rise report contains best projections yet for Washington’s coasts

One certainty under climate change is that global ocean levels are rising. A new report led by Washington Sea Grant and the University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group provides the clearest picture yet of what to expect in Washington state. A new report from Washington’s “Coastal Resilience Project” provides new projections of sea level rise for 171 different sites and communities around coastal Washington state.

Crystal Raymond on King 5 discussing innovative climate & forestry initiative

Crystal Raymond was featured on King 5 as part of an innovative climate and forest resilience project underway in King County. This project, which was part of her previous position at Seattle City Light, is a collaborative effort with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, Seattle Public Utilities, the Wildlife Conversation Society and the Northwest Natural Resource Group.

Upcoming Lecture by Lai-yung (Ruby) Lueng from PNNL on June 13th

Lai-Yung (Ruby) Lueng will be visiting UW from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) this Friday, July 13th. Ruby will present “An overview of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) in Phase 1 and Phase 2”. This lecture will held in ATG  310 from 1:30-2:30 PM. We hope to see you there!

New Chapter for Climate Impacts Group Deputy Director, Joe Casola

After three years at the Climate Impacts Group, Deputy Director, Joe Casola, is leaving to start a new chapter in his life as a full-time dad.

Having worked as a graduate student with the Climate Impacts Group in 2005, Joe was no stranger to our mission when he became Deputy Director in July 2015. With a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington and experiences in the private (ICF International) and non-profit sectors (as Director of Science and Impacts at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions), Joe brought a strong scientific foundation and extensive experience working with public and private sector decision makers on climate adaptation.

Snover Shares Climate Resilience Message at Science Immersion Workshop

Amy Snover, Director of the Climate Impact Group, recently joined the Metcalf Institute’s 2018 Science Immersion Workshop in Rhode Island. As an invited expert, Amy interacted shared CIG’s message about climate resilience with journalists from around the world. Melissa Ross, host and producer of WJCT‘s First Coast Connect in Jacksonville, FL reports on her experience and what she learned, including one of CIG’s central messages: “We must challenge deeply held assumptions about the stability of the global climate that are embedded in our laws and institutions.”

New Actionable Science Skills-Building Webinar Series

The Northwest Climate Science Center has organized a new Actionable Climate Science Skills-Building Webinar Series. This series is designed to help those engaged in climate science research better understand the range of approaches for developing actionable science. Each webinar will explore ways to support effective collaborations between scientific researchers and natural resource managers. The first webinar will be held on April 3rd, 2018 and will feature Amy Snover & Meade Krosby.

Climate Impacts Group welcomes new climate adaptation specialist

The Climate Impacts Group is excited to welcome Dr. Crystal Raymond to the team as our new Climate Adaptation Specialist. Crystal has a strong background working within organizations to translate climate risks to management concerns and incorporate climate change risk reduction perspectives into decision-making.

“Crystal’s experience doing on-the-ground climate adaptation work with federal agencies, regional collaboratives, and local government, combined with her strong grounding in research science and terrific communication skills, will be of broad benefit to our region,” says Amy Snover, Director. “She brings practical insight into the realities of climate risk management within complex organizations with multiple competing pressures and priorities.

New CIG Report: Nooksack Indian Tribe Natural Resources Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

CIG researchers Harriet Morgan and Meade Krosby recently completed an natural resources vulnerability assessment for the Nooksack Indian Tribe. Working collaboratively with the Tribe’s Natural Resource staff, CIG evaluated the climate change vulnerability of priority species and habitats for the Tribe. Information provided in this assessment offers a rigorous foundation for future climate adaptation efforts aimed at addressing climate risks to the Nooksack Tribe’s priority species and habitats.
